About the author Idario Santos

Born in Prata – PB, Northeast of Brazil, Idario received his college degree in 1993.

Working as agronomist in a vibrant city of Petrolina – PE, in his early career, due to his important work as a consultant to fruit exporters of the São Francisco River Valley, he was awarded with a Certificate of Excellence by the Brazilian Board of Agronomy, known as CREA.

In 2005, he abandoned most of his dreams and moved to the United States of America where his son Artur Santos was the first Brazilian to be freed from a rare disease called Maple Syrup Urine Disease, MSUD for short.

In May 2014, Idario Santos first launched the Portuguese version of his book “Uma Doce Odisseia” in his home country of Brazil. There, he spoke at the American Chamber of Commerce in São Paulo for an international audience. On the same period, Idario Santos presented to the Brazilian House of Representatives a bill, entitled “Artur Bucar Santos Law” intended to guaranty a proper newborn screening and treatment for rare diseases in Brazil. In October 2014, he lectured about his family odyssey and his volunteering work to a large audience at the 2014 Newborn Screening & Genetic Testing Symposium in Anaheim – CA.

Idario Santos has been volunteering and speaking on behalf of all neglected children since his son was cured from MSUD. Along with Mr. Santos, the Clinic for Special Children based in Strasburg, PA has been playing a very important role on the genetic disorders field, not only with meaningful work in genetic researches, but in treating patients from all over the world and supporting local and foreign physicians with information and scientifically published articles & protocols to improve the lives of those suffering from rare diseases.
